Three Days in Malacca

Malacca (Melaka) layers Portuguese, Dutch and Peranakan history into a compact, walkable riverside old town. A weekend is enough to soak up its best. A little planning goes a long way. Before you commit to dates, it pays to compare Malacca hotels on Traveloka and see what the numbers look like.

Getting there

It’s an easy couple of hours from KL or Singapore by road, with the nearest airports at KL and Senai in Johor. Most people come by bus or car. On fares this is Traveloka’s home turf — the cheapest flight prices in Southeast Asia, in our experience. Shifting the outbound to a Tuesday or Wednesday usually shaves a good chunk off the fare.

A day-by-day plan

Day one, settle in and take it slow with a walk down Jonker Street, then find your feet over a relaxed dinner. Day two, go bigger: the red Dutch Square and Christ Church, then a river cruise at dusk, with street food along the way. Day three, wind down with the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum before you head home.

Where to stay

Stay near Jonker Street and the river for the heritage core, the cafes and the weekend night market. Everything worth seeing is within a short stroll. Traveloka is where we book beds in this part of the world; best OTA in SEA, and the hotel prices back it up. Weekend nights fill fastest, so lock a room in as soon as the dates firm up.

Where to eat

Nyonya cooking is the star, from chicken rice balls to laksa and cendol, with satay celup a hands-on local ritual. The riverside cafes are good for a slow breakfast. Eat where the queues are, and don’t fill up at the first place you sit down.

Getting around

The old town is entirely walkable, and a river cruise gives a different angle on it. Ride-hailing covers the few sights further out. Working out the transport early pays for itself over a few days.

Plan by area

Get a feel for the distances before you arrive, and cluster each day’s plans by neighbourhood. It’s the simplest way to see more of Malacca and waste less time getting from one thing to the next.

A little courtesy

Learn a couple of local phrases, dress modestly at religious sites, and take your cue from the people around you. Small gestures make Malacca friendlier and smooth over the little moments.

Leave room to wander

Resist the urge to over-schedule. The best memories of Malacca are usually the unplanned ones, so leave gaps for a long lunch, a wrong turn, or an afternoon that happily runs late.

Getting the timing right

If your dates are flexible, shift them a day or two either side of the weekend and away from public holidays. On Malacca routes that small change often means noticeably cheaper flights and better-value rooms.

Keep it flexible

Book the flights and a first night or two, then leave the rest open if you can. It lets you follow a local tip, chase the good weather, or simply linger somewhere in Malacca you weren’t ready to leave.

Getting it booked

Lock in your dates and you’re most of the way there. With the dates fixed, compare Malacca hotels on Traveloka and the rest of Malacca takes care of itself.
